Growing up in Canada, everyone knew Swollen Members. Prevail blows my mind every single time he steps up to the microphone. His speed, precision and rhetoric are still incredible and he keeps pushing the limits. Madchild is continually releasing solo projects and working on personal progress, which is so powerful and something that fans seem to really respond to. Lastly, Rob the Viking is still putting out hardcore tunes with amazing samples that make you sit up and say, “Where did that come from?”

Before I interviewed the band, I got to see them live in Ottawa courtesy of their awesome team who snuck me in with all of my gear at the end of the show. The atmosphere was jubilant. Fans were jumping on stage with them and singing and dancing along. There was stage diving and at the end, I was escorted to meet the group.

I didn’t stay long. The next day would be long and full of Juno Week interviews and I didn’t want to intrude too much. In truth, I did not know what to expect, but they were gentlemen and stood up immediatly to shake my hand and my nerves were settled.

The next day, we all had lunch and it turned out to be the most revealing interview I had ever been part of. I would go on to interview Madchild for his first solo album “Dope Sick” for Yahoo Canada Music in August 2012.

The decision to return to the original Swollen Members style was something that came after the band realized that they wanted to just be themselves. Looking back, their album “Heavy” signified the shift in their artistic direction that sent them on a different path than originally intended.

“‘Heavy’ came after we had won three Juno Awards three years in a row, six or seven MuchMusic Video Awards, West Coast Awards and we had just gone gold and platinum and life was changing,” Madchild said.
